WOODLAND HILLS (CBSLA.com) — Police Friday were investigating a fatal crash involving a car versus a tree in the San Fernando Valley.

The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 5300 block of Don Pio Drive, near Ventura Boulevard, in Woodland Hills, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The male passenger was killed instantly in the crash.

The driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Neither occupants were wearing their seat belts, officials said.

Detectives were investigating if speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
