Garcetti Seeks Financial Support During 1st Official Visit To Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is on his first official visit to the Capitol and is making his case for revitalizing California's most populous city.

His visit Thursday comes as lawmakers are negotiating the state budget for the coming fiscal year.

Garcetti told lawmakers in the Senate that he is trying to bring together fellow mayors to devise ways to improve California's economy. He says he needs state support to retain the film industry and for earthquake retrofits and water projects.

Garcetti is expected to have a strong ally in incoming Senate leader Kevin de Leon. His fellow Los Angeles Democrat supports state matching funds for a $1 billion restoration project for the Los Angeles River.

Los Angeles, with 3.9 million residents, has a population equivalent to the state Oregon.
