Car Fatally Strikes Parishioner In Church Parking Lot In Port Hueneme

PORT HUENEME (CBSLA.com)  —  A car fatally struck a parishioner outside a Port Hueneme church Sunday.

Services were already over at the First Assembly of God Church when the car struck two women in the parking lot located in the 500 block of North Fifth Street.

The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m., authorities said.

The car then barreled through a brick wall and then into the backyard of a neighbor's home.

Police said the elderly driver -- identified as Odessa Edward, in her late 70s -- might have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake.

Edward had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Cristy Fajardo, reporting for CBS2, said several people tried to save the injured.

The deceased was declared dead at the scene. The other injured pedestrian -- a Camarillo resident -- has moderate injuries, Fajardo reported.

"We were like come on, come on, man, Jesus Christ, come on, you can do  it," said Javier Isidoro who tendered to the injured. "You can do it, but nope, it kept getting worse and worse. You just saw her all purple, with her tongue out. And when the paramedics got here they were like they could do nothing about it ."

Fajardo had the name of the deceased -- a 60-something woman from Oxnard -- but the coroner wouldn't officially release it until the woman's next of kin could be notified.
