Giant Matchsticks Popping Up Around LA, But Why?

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Giant matchsticks have been popping up around Los Angeles and no one is sure why or what they represent.

The large props have been spotted in areas such as Runyon Canyon, Hollywood, Venice and Los Feliz with #Moments written on the bottom in red.

KNX 1070's Claudia Peschiutta reports the matchsticks have sparked a flurry of activity on Instagram and Twitter, and even caught the eye of city officials.

Some people believe they are a fire safety message, while others think it is street art or represents an inspirational message.

But City Councilman Tom LaBonge said the matchsticks may not be entirely appropriate for a city that regularly faces threats of wildfires.

"I'm a big arts supporter and I'm also a real supporter of guerrilla art, but not in the fire district, not with the image of a match," LaBonge said.

One Instagram user wrote: "A matchstick can burn in a second, but beautiful moments last in your heart forever. Don't take them for granted."
