CHP: 19 Calif. Motorists Killed In Traffic Accidents Over Memorial Day Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Nineteen motorists were killed in traffic accidents on freeways throughout the state over the Memorial Day weekend, with three of them dying in Los Angeles County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The number is up from 15 drivers who were killed on the highway in 2013 throughout the state, with two local deaths, according to a tally by the CHP.

254 people were arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence in LA County between Friday and Monday.

Over the same weekend in 2013, 245 total people were taken into custody, according to CHP.

CHP officers arrested 62 suspected drunken drivers in Orange County between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday, which is up 11 from last year.

No fatalities were reported by law enforcement officers in Orange County for either year.

Across the state, 1,111 alleged drunken drivers were arrested by CHP officers over the weekend, which is down from 2013's number of 1,133.
