Caught On Camera: Truck Smashes Through Costa Mesa Donut Shop

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com)  —  A truck smashed through a Costa Mesa donut shop  and it was caught on camera.

Employees and patrons were given a huge scare when the truck came barreling through the front door of Dippity Donuts located in the 1800 block of Newport Boulevard.

The crash occurred just after midnight Sunday morning.

The driver told police he confused the gas pedal and the brake.

One woman was reportedly hospitalized with minor injuries.

CBS2's Bobby Kaple spoke with one man who witnessed the aftermath of the accident.

"It was quite the scene," said Matt Meyer.

He told Kaple he was working across the street at the time of the accident. Meyer works as a server on the patio of the Black Knight Pub.

"One of my tables goes, 'Hey, someone just drove through the donut shop!' And I look over, and there is a truck in the middle of the window."

Costa Mesa Police said the driver of the truck had one passenger -- a pregnant woman. The driver and the pregnant woman were not injured.

Bonnie Matthews walks to the gym -- across the street from the donut shop -- and she's not surprised that a truck drove through the window.

"Surprised? Not one bit," she said.

Matthews said Broadway and Newport can be a dangerous corner.

"People zip through here really fast all the time," she said, "I definitely worry about the people drinking on Friday and Saturdays."
