23-Year-Old Man Fatally Shot In East LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 23-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday on a residential street in East L.A.

The man was shot once around 1:30 a.m. as he was walking to meet his girlfriend on the 900 block of Kern Avenue, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

The man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

CBS2's Art Barron said the dead man was identified by friends and family as Alex Gines.

The shooting occurred in a residential area, bordered by the 710 and 5 freeways. Police say the victim lived nearby.

There were no reported witnesses to the shooting.

Police say Gines was not a member of a gang and they're still trying to determine the motive.

Erica Schafler, a longtime Ginas friend,  left flowers at the scene of the murder.

She told CBS2's Art Barron she knew Ginas since they were both kids.

"It's pretty sad that you can't walk across the street from your home without something like this happening to you," Schafler said.

Off-camera, a neighbor told Barron Ginas was calling out for help.

"And then he just passed out," the neighbor said.

The family told Barron they were going to hold a car wash on Sunday to try to raise money for funeral costs.

Anyone with information was asked to call the LAPD. Anonymous tips can be left at (800) 222-TIPS.
