Jail Inmate Accused Of Throwing Punches At Deputy

VENTURA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a jail inmate has been arrested on charges of felony battery after allegedly attacking a deputy while in custody.

Daniel Moreno of Oxnard has been in custody since April 6, on suspicion of unlawful taking of a vehicle, according to a written statement issued by the Ventura County Sheriff's office.

The alleged attack unfolded about Wednesday morning about 8:20 a.m. at the Ventura County Sheriff's pre-trial detention facility.

The statement said that 31-year-old Moreno allegedly starting throwing punches at a deputy's head while the deputy attempted to get another inmate's property from the cell.

"Moreno pushed the deputy into the wall causing injury to the deputy's elbow and hand," the statement also alleged.

Moreno is also accused of spitting blood at other deputies who tried to intervene.

Authorities say deputies were eventually able to get control of Moreno, who has since been charged with battery on a police officer.

The deputy was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries but was later released.
