California Strawberry Festival May 17 & 18 In Oxnard

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — The 31st annual California Strawberry Festival will take place in Oxnard May 17 and 18!

Bonnie Weigel and Lisa Carey visited the KCAL9 studios Monday to talk about the event that has raised more than $4 million for nonprofit groups since it began.

The festival includes over 50 food and beverage booths with strawberries throughout! A portion of the money raised from the festival goes to over 20 charities around the Southland.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online.

General admission is $12, seniors 62+ are $8 and children ages 5-12 are $5. Kids 4 and under are free.

The first 500 kids to arrive each day receive a free foam visor courtesy of Wendy's.

Recipes:

STRAWBERRY SALSA
Ingredients
1 cup diced fresh California strawberries
1/2 cup diced mango
2 cups of diced tomatoes
1/4 cups diced pineapple
2 tablespoons diced red onion
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 1/2 teaspoons rice vinegar
Salt and black pepper
Cayenne pepper

Preparation
To make Strawberry Salsa, gently mix together all ingredients; season with salt and pepper. Enjoy with your favorite chips.

Strawberry Chipolte – Kale Mix Salad
Salsa
1 cup of diced fresh California strawberries
2 cups of diced tomatoes
1/4-1/3 8 oz can of smoked chipolte peppers – drained and diced
2 tablespoons diced red onion
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
Salt and black pepper

Salad
1/4 cup head of red cabbage – chopped
1/4 head of green cabbage – chopped
1/4 cup of broccoli – chopped
1/4 cup of kale – chopped
Salt and pepper
2 tablespoons of virgin olive oil
Fresh Mexican cheese or feta

Preparation
Take all of the salad ingredients and toss together
Place the tossed salad on a plate
Spoon the strawberry chipolte salsa over the salad
Enjoy!
Options: add fresh grilled chicken or sliced avocados to the salad
