Off-Duty San Bernardino Police Officer Killed In Crash On 91 Freeway
CORONA (CBSLA.com) — An off-duty city of San Bernardino police officer was killed Thursday morning in a motorcycle crash, the department confirmed.
Shaun Jarvis, 30, was killed shortly before 9 a.m. on the westbound 91 Freeway at Main Street in Corona.
Jarvis was traveling at approximately 50 mph when he was sideswiped by a vehicle merging into the carpool lane, the California Highway Patrol said.
The force of the impact threw him from his bike, over the center divider and into eastbound lanes.
According to the CHP, the driver of a red sedan tried to stop, but could not and the vehicle hit the officer.
Jarvis died at the scene.
San Bernardino police said the veteran officer is survived by his wife and children.
Officers remembered Jarvis at a press conference on Thursday, saying they could always count on the eight-year veteran to lighten the mood.
"It was hard to see him. I went to the scene. It was hard to see him like that, because I do remember him joking in the office," Lt. Rich Lawhead said.
Police said Jarvis was heading to a dealership in Orange County to have communication equipment in his helmet looked at on his day off when he was struck.
Jarvis, who lived in Beaumont, had joined the motorcycle unit in January.
The CHP is investigating the accident and could not say who, if anyone, was at fault.
