Mother Of Slain Barber Says Her Son Was Loving Family Man

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  — The mother of a man fatally shot during a robbery at the South Los Angeles hair salon where he worked recalled him Saturday as a caring, church-going man who loved to spend time with his nephews and sometimes volunteered on behalf of troubled youths.

The victim was 32-year-old Kevin Williams. The victim was also known by friends and family as "Quincy" and "Q The Barber."

Two suspects, both men in their 20s, entered the Western Hair Lounge at 6522 S. Western Ave. about 5 p.m. Friday and shots were fired during a robbery, according to Los Angeles Police Lt. Jeff Nolte.

Williams was struck by the gunfire and was taken by a private party to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Nolte said.

The suspects were last seen running through the shop's parking lot, he said.

Detailed descriptions of the men were not available.

Williams mother, Jerri, said her son had worked at the hair salon for years. He had no children of his own, but was popular with his nephews.

"He loved everybody," she said.

Williams attended church regularly and sometimes volunteered at juvenile hall, she said.

"To know him is to love him," she said.

On Friday evening, the man's friends told CBS2's Randy Paige that Williams would often give kids free haircuts or stage free barbecues for them.

At an emotional vigil Saturday evening, the man's girlfriend tearily asked her boyfriend's killers to give themselves up.

She also told reporters she had been looking forward to celebrating the couple's shared birthday next month.
