Man Found Guilty In Crash That Killed Road Workers

TORRANCE (CBS/AP) — A jury has convicted a driver of second-degree murder in a crash that killed two construction workers on Interstate 405 near Torrance.

Yocio Jonathan Gomez was found guilty Friday of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and other charges. He faces up to 30 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced in May.

Authorities say Gomez was speeding through a construction zone at approximately 3:30 a.m. on July 22, 2012 and crashed his Ford Explorer into the back of a Lexus SUV. The impact caused the SUV to spin out of control before striking and killing two workers and injuring a third worker.

Ramon Lopez, 56, and Ricardo Zamora, 58, were among those killed. All three victims were employed by a contracting firm under Caltrans supervision.

Prosecutors say Gomez had left a friend's party where he had been drinking. His mother and other partygoers had urged him to stay.
