Man Arrested In Fatal Riverside Park Stabbing

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — A 33-year-old man faced murder charges Monday after he allegedly stabbed a man in a Riverside park.

Andre Reed was arrested Sunday night and was being held on $1 million bail.

Reed is accused of fatally stabbing 37-year-old Marco Rolan Sr., of Rialto, earlier that evening at Bonaminio Park, 4704 Tesquesquite Avenue, Riverside police said.

According to detectives, authorities received several 911 calls about a fight between a group of men visiting the park and another group from nearby apartments.

"One of the subjects from across the street produced a knife and stabbed Mr. Rolan. The second victim was also cut during this same altercation," Sgt. David Amador said.

Rolan and the other victim were taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where the Rialto resident died.

"The other victim received non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released," Amador said.

Police were later able to locate Reed and arrest him without incident at his apartment in the 5300 block of Olivewood.

Reed was scheduled to make his initial court appearance Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Residents were unnerved to learn about the incident at the park, which is popular with families.

"I don't think I would be here today if I had known about it," Doretha Sarpy said. "I wouldn't expect something like that to happen, but, you know, violence is everywhere."

KCAL9's Tom Wait reported that crime at Riverside parks is a hot-button issue. Back in February, the city considered hiring a private security firm to patrol parks.

Instead, it decided to spend $3 million in additional funds for police patrols. Officers were on the beat Sunday night, but not at Bonaminio Park when the fight happened.

"It's a good idea, I think. Just to make everyone feel safer. The sight of more police officers might make everybody feel more comfortable," Nicole Manning said.
