12.5-Hour Standoff Ends Peacefully In Whittier

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — A 12-and-a-half hour standoff ended peacefully Friday morning, with the release of a woman and the arrest of a male suspect, police said.

The standoff began at 4 p.m. Thursday in an apartment in the 7900 block of Bright Avenue.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Whittier police and a SWAT team were sent to the scene, officials said.

Crisis negotiators remained in contact with the suspect until it ended at 4:20 a.m. Friday.

"Through several hours of negotiation, the suspect released the hostage," Officer Brad White said. "She was able to walk out of the apartment building. She was taken away from the scene . . . and taken to paramedics to be looked at."

The suspect surrendered shortly after and was taken into custody, he added.

A motive behind the standoff and the relationship between the suspect and hostage was unknown.

No injuries were reported.

About 50 residents in a four block radius were evacuated to a local senior center during the situation.
