OC Man Convicted For Bank Hostage-Taking

SANTA ANA (AP) — An Orange County man who held a bank manager hostage and fired at police during a standoff has been convicted of numerous crimes — but jurors acquitted him of attempted murder.

City News Service says 56-year-old Myung Jae Kim of Irvine was found guilty Friday of false imprisonment, assault, possession of a destructive device and making criminal threats. He faces up to 24 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Kim targeted the manager of Saehan Bank in Buena Park in 2012 because she once worked for a different bank where $235,000 of his money vanished from a safety deposit box.

Authorities say Kim had a sawed-off shotgun, pipe bombs and a knife when he took the woman hostage for nearly four hours. Police finally stormed the bank and wounded him.
