65-Year-Old Parents Attacked By Son's German Shepherd-Pitbull Mix

VILLA PARK (CBSLA.com) — A Villa Park man and his wife were attacked by their son's German shepherd-pitbull mix Tuesday, suffering severe injuries.

The dog, which weighs roughly 75-pounds, attacked the couple in their home in the 9900 block of Oakwood Circle at about 11:30 a.m. while their son was away.

"The dog was a rescue and it had some behavioral problems, so they took it to a school for training, and the dog seemed to be doing well lately," Orange County Fire Authority Captain Steve Concialdi said. "But for some reason, it turned on the people who live there."

The dog reportedly "chewed up" both arms of the man. The male victim also suffered cuts to his head.

The canine then turned and bit down on his wife's arm as she tried to pry the dog off her husband.

"What saved him were some neighbors who came running over with a hose, spraying the dog with the hose," Capt. Concialdi said.

When the dog finally let go of the man, they managed to trap the dog in a bedroom.

The victims, both 65 years old, were treated at a hospital in Anaheim, where one may need to be admitted.

The dog was picked up by Orange County animal control officers and will be held for a 10-day quarantine, according to director of Orange County Animal Care, Ryan Drabeck.

If the owner decided to surrender the dog, it will likely be put down, according to Drabek.

Otherwise, an investigation will determine whether or not the dog is returned to its owner, and under what restrictions, if any are ultimately deemed necessary.
