Security Director At Senior Living Facility Accused Of Stealing From Residents

THOUSAND OAKS (CBSLA.com) – A security director at a senior living facility has been arrested on suspicion of burglarizing several residences within the complex.

Michael Glen South, 57, of Thousand Oaks, is facing felony residential burglary, elder abuse and possession of stolen property charges.

Investigators received information over the weekend about South possibly possessing items from the University Village Retirement Living facility in Thousand Oaks.

"An investigation revealed that South was involved in numerous burglaries and thefts from residents of the complex. Due to South's position at the complex, he had key access to the senior citizen homes," the Ventura County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

A search warrant was subsequently issued at South's home, where authorities found items such as guns, jewelry, medication and other household items, according to the department.

"Any time someone you know turns out to be a 'bad guy', that's a bad feeling," resident Gerald Friss said. "I'm disappointed. I would not have wanted Michael to end like this."

South was one of only two people who had accessibility to the entire facility.

"His actions happened recently, we acted quickly once we knew about it, and removed him, as a threat, away from our community," Executive Director Ryan Exline said.

Officials say some of the items helped them locate additional victims.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Det. Matt Theobald at (805)371-8396.
