LAPD Pursuing Possibly Armed Suspect In Sylmar

SYLMAR (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles Police are chasing a suspect through Sylmar.

Officials said the man is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. They believe the suspect is armed.

The suspect is driving a green pickup truck.

Authorities said the chase started around 5:35 p.m.

Police are setting up a command center near the suspect's residence believing he will try to get to his home.

Officials also believe the subject is smoking some kind of narcotic throughout the chase.

Stu Mundel, reporting in Sky9, said the chase was mostly slow speed.

Mundel called the situation "extremely dangerous" as police confirmed the suspect was carrying a weapon.

The suspect has driven by several schools during the chase.

Authorities are asking residents of Sylmar to stay indoors.

The suspect avoided major streets and freeways preferring to stay on surface streets in residential neighborhoods.

At one point during the chase, the suspect (who was on a cell phone for most of the pursuit) seemed to toss some type of powdery substance out of the vehicle.

The suspect was going slow enough during the pursuit that he was able to calmly drive around spike strips laid out by the LAPD.

After several more attempts at putting down spike strips, the man came to a stop and started to get out of the vehicle.

Two women who apparently know the suspect rushed to the cab of the truck. It was unclear if the man handed them anything.

But within minutes, the trio were swarmed by officers.

The man was apprehended. Police questioned the two women.
