Couple Uses Mattress To Save Boy From 3rd-Floor Window Fall

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — A couple used a mattress to save a toddler from a third-floor window fall in Burbank over the weekend.

CBS2's Kristine Lazar reported that Konrad Lightner and his wife were moving furniture Sunday morning on North Pass Avenue when they spotted the 3-year-old hanging from cable wires.

The young boy had climbed out of a window in search of the stuffed animals he had tossed down below.

Lightner quickly grabbed a mattress.

"When he's about to fall, I tried to cushion the blow into the box spring," he said.

Firefighters who arrived on the scene gave the couple a department coin, a symbol to honor their heroic actions.

The Lightner family said timing was everything. They had been stuck in an elevator for 30 minutes earlier that morning. Had that not happened, they wouldn't have been passing by the boy's window at exactly the right time.

"We were in the right place at the right time. We're just glad it ended so well," Lightner's wife said.

As a precaution, the boy was taken to the hospital. He's doing fine.

"There's just nothing I could give [the couple] for saving my little boy," the boy's mother said.

The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services will conduct an investigation.
