Celebrate National Pi Day With Some Actual Pie

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — You may not know this but March 14 is National Pi Day, which celebrates the mathematical constant — approximately 3.14159 — so crucial to trigonometry and geometry.

And what better way to celebrate Pi Day than with pie!

Ryan Lopiccolo, owner of Australian bakery Pie-Not in Costa Mesa, joined KCAL9 Studios Friday to demonstrate how to make the popular Aussie meat pie, "The Dog's Eye." It's one of his many savory pies that make for a quick, wholesome snack or a hearty dinner. For more information visit PieNot.com.

Recipe — The Dog's Eye

Filling:

  • olive oil
  • 1 large onion, minced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500 g lean ground beef
  • 2 cups liquid (tomato sauce and other sauces)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • fresh herbs to taste

In a well-oiled pan sauté garlic and onions until translucent. Add ground beef and brown. Once browned add liquids. Let simmer. Add salt, pepper and other fresh herbs to taste.

Bottom Crust:

  • 400 g flour
  • 200 g butter
  • 100 ml water
  • pinch of sea salt

Puff Pastry: Purchase pre-made puff pastry at grocery store.

Directions:

1. Cool filling.
2. Roll out bottom pastry into sheet and gently place in pie tin or large muffin tin.
3. Fill almost to brim with filling.
4. Top with puff pastry.
5. Crimp edges and cut off excess.
6. Egg wash top.
7. Poke air holes.
8. Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes.
