Irvine Students Spot 'False Killer Whales' Near Dana Point

DANA POINT (CBSLA.com) — Irvine students spotted a group of false killer whales near Dana Point on Wednesday.

The Brywood Elementary School students saw the group of about 30 whales around 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. a few miles off Dana Point, according to the Ocean Institute.

The students were participating in the institute's Adopt-A-Class program.

"I have been cruising in this area for many years, and I have never seen this species of cetacean off of our coast," said Mike Bursk, captain of the Ocean Institute's RV Sea Explorer. "They prefer deep temperate to tropical waters. We were all very excited about this find."
