Man Found Dead In Ransacked Westmont Home

WESTMONT (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Monday were investigating the death of a 67-year-old man who may have been strangled in a Westmont home.

The crime occurred around 10:45 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of West 98th Street, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies from the South Los Angeles Station responded to the residence after they received a 911 call about a woman's ransacked home and a man dead inside.

The man, identified by family members as Earnest Dewitt Brannon, was found in a back bedroom and pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Brannon was likely strangled during a fight with the suspect.

"One room appeared like there was a tussle, stuff all over the floor . . .  in the front. Then it lead to the back and that's where I witnesses him dead," neighbor Willie Miller said.

Family members said the victim had been staying at the home for the last month.

Neighbors, meanwhile, say they are on their guard after the tragedy.

"If they can do that to someone in their home, to me, that's quite brazen," one neighbor said.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact the LASD Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
