Officials Tighten LA Marathon Security In Wake Of Boston Bombings

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Tighter security measures will be in place Sunday for the ASICS Los Angeles Marathon in the wake of last year's Boston bombings.

The race covers 26.2 miles, beginning at 7 a.m. at Dodger Stadium and ending at the Santa Monica Pier.

"Our top priority is the safety of our runners, volunteers, spectators, and partners," race officials said.

An estimated 25,000 marathoners taking part in the race will notice security changes starting at packet pick-up, as they will now be required to get their own race gear in person.

Participants are also only allowed to bring hydration packs, fanny packs and fuel belts, which will all be checked.

Tracey Russell, the executive director of the L.A. Marathon LLC, told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO runners and spectators will have to clear security at one of four checkpoints across the course.

Spectators will also be barred from entering Palisades Park, south of Washington and north of Santa Monica boulevards.

Marathon officials have also prohibited an unsanctioned bicycle race that has sped through the course prior to the event for several years.
