Travolta: ‘Beating Myself Up All Day’ Over Mispronouncing Idina Menzel’s Name
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Actor John Travolta says he has been “beating myself up” about butchering singer Idina Menzel’s name while introducing her at Sunday’s Academy Awards.
During Sunday’s ceremony at the Dolby Theatre, Travolta was delivering a glowing introduction of the singer, who was about to sing what ended up winning the Oscar for original song, “Let It Go,” from the animated film “Frozen.” But when he got to her name, he stumbled over the pronunciation and called her something more like, “Adela Dazeem.”
“I’ve been beating myself up all day,” Travolta, 60, said. “Then I thought, what would Idina Menzel say? She’d say ‘Let it go, let it go!’ Idina is incredibly talented and I am so happy ‘Frozen’ took home two Oscars Sunday night.”
“Frozen” also won the Oscar for best animated film.
Travolta’s flub quickly became fodder for comedians and late-night talk show hosts. Multiple parody accounts have also been established using various spellings of “Adela Dazeem.”
