70-Foot Boat Washes Ashore With 3 On Board In Playa Del Rey

PLAYA DEL REY (CBSLA.com) — A large boat ran aground Thursday morning near Ballona Creek in Playa del Rey.

The 70-foot powerboat was anchored just south of Marina del Rey harbor when the ship's captain awoke around 4:30 a.m. to his anchor dragging, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

"His attempts to start the vessel's engines were unsuccessful, and before responding rescue units could arrive, his vessel went aground in heavy seas," authorities said.

Baywatch and Harbor Patrol were alerted to the washed up boat through a 911 call.

"The three occupants of the powerboat, along with 3 dogs, were assisted by responding Marina del Rey Sheriff's rescue boat deputies and Los Angeles County Lifeguards," the LASD said.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities were trying to determine how to move the vessel.
