NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A driver was seriously injured Thursday night when a DUI suspect slammed into her vehicle during a police pursuit.

Police say the two-mile chase started just before 10:30 p.m. and ended in a crash at the intersection of Dover and Mariners drives.

The driver of a black Mercedes sedan allegedly drove through a stop sign and crashed into a Prius, injuring the driver, according to police.

Several nearby residents witnessed the crash.

“A gentleman was screaming in agony and I could hear a woman crying,” resident Jim Cavanaugh said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she remained in serious condition.

The 43-year-old driver, Benjamin Scanlan of Newport Beach, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
