Costa Mesa Man, 39, Faces Assault Charges After Fighting With Police, ER Personnel

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 39-year-old Costa Mesa man faces assault charges after fighting with police and ER personnel.

Jason Brent Beverly was arrested Wednesday afternoon in the 200 block of Cabrillo Street about 4:10 following a call about a man yelling and creating a disturbance.

Police said Beverly refused to go into custody peacefully and that two officers had to use a Taser to subdue him after a brief fight.

Beverly also allegedly fought with ER personnel who removed the Taser barbs from his person, police said.

The suspect and a female companion, who both acknowledged they'd been drinking, said they were testing one another and their individual physical prowess by "sparring," according to Costa Mesa Police Lt. Bryan Glass.

Beverly was sitting on the curb talking to the two officers when he suddenly stood and lunged at them, Glass said.

After being medically cleared, Beverly was booked into the Costa Mesa Police Department Jail on suspicion of obstructing/resisting an officer and battery upon an officer and emergency personnel, Glass said.
