Driver Found Guilty Of Murder After Dragging Man For 2 Miles
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A substance abuse counselor was convicted Tuesday of mowing down a 31-year-old man with her car in Torrance and then driving more than two miles with the victim lodged in her windshield, authorities reported.
Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 51, was found guilty of two counts of DUI and hit and run in connection with the death of Phillip Moreno, according to Los Angeles County court records.
Moreno was struck just before 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 24, 2012, as he was leaving a neighborhood bar. He was crossing Torrance Boulevard and Madrid Avenue.
Concerned witnesses told police they forced Wilkins to stop driving.
Moreno was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The defendant's attorney argued the man had jumped on her car and Wilkins panicked, but that she wasn't impaired.
Sentencing is set for March 26.
