Former Security Guard Pleads No Contest In Theft Of Lakers Championship Rings

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a former security guard at the El Segundo training facility for the LA Lakers pleaded no contest Friday to stealing three of the team's championship rings.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office said in a department statement that Mejía Eddie Monterroso was sentenced to 180 days in county jail and three years of probation.

The 23-year-old was also ordered to pay nearly $14,000 in restitution, officials said.

The statement said Monterroso was also convicted of stealing hundreds of gift cards at the Lakers' offices in 2013.

Police say Monterroso worked as an overnight security guard. After his arrest, police said they recovered the rings during a search of Monterroso's Inglewood home.
