Suspected DUI Driver Crashes Car Into Costa Mesa Home

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — A suspected drunk driver crashed his vehicle into an Orange County home early Wednesday morning, police said.

The accident happened just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Jacaranda Avenue and Myrtlewood Street in Costa Mesa when 25-year-old Lawrence Smith allegedly failed to make a turn.

The car crashed through the wall between the homeowner's master bedroom and a spare bedroom.

"It was a loud noise and when I woke up, it was just debris and dust everywhere," Don Vanderwal said. "Honestly, I thought it was an earthquake and the house was falling apart."

Vanderwal's 44-year-old wife suffered minor facial lacerations and was taken to Hoag Hospital.

A 24-year-old male passenger in Smith's vehicle was also injured and transported to Western Medical Center for treatment of chest pains.

Smith, of Costa Mesa, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI.

"I'm angry. Obviously a few feet, one way or another, and my wife or I or my kids could be dead right now," said Vanderwal.

No other injuries were reported.

Smith was being held on $100,000 bail.
