Woman Believes 22-Year-Old Brother Was Killed Because He Was Gay

JURUPA VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — A woman believes her 22-year-old brother was killed earlier this month because he was gay.

Julian Martin Del Campo was shot in his car in the 3600 block of Scenic Drive in Jurupa Valley.

His friend, who was also in the vehicle, wasn't hurt.

"I think that he was singled out. He had an equality sticker on the back of his car," Del Campo's sister, Heidi, said.

Heidi suspects her brother's murder was a hate crime, but a Riverside County Sheriff's Department spokesman hasn't heard about the claim.

"Whether it's a hate crime or not, it is not okay. We are here to love each other, not to hate," Heidi said.

Heidi told KCAL9's Crystal Cruz that she's doing all she can online to get Del Campo's favorite artist, Lady Gaga, to help spread the word about her brother's death.

"He adored Lady Gaga," Heidi said. "He really looked up to her because she made him feel okay with his sexuality and we loved him the way he was born."
