Woman, 28, Sentenced In Death Of Australian Rugby Star

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a Westchester woman was sentenced Friday in connection with a fatal collision that claimed the life of an Australian rugby star.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Leslie Brown sentenced Cara Maree Cameron to four years in state prison.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office said in a statement that the 28-year-old Cameron had pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated last month in the Aug. 2012, death of Gary Mara.

Mara, who was on vacation at the time, was fatally struck after entering the crosswalk against the light. At the time of the crash, Mara was with his wife and 8-year-old daughter.

Prosecutors say Mara, a former rugby star, died at the hospital.

Cameron's sentence was handed down after Mara's wife read a statement to the court, according to the statement.
