LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A Long Beach whale watch captain is calling 2013 a banner year for visitors from the deep.
Dan Salas of Harbor Breeze Cruises has been running whale watch excursions for more than two decades. He tells KNX 1070’s Ron Kilgore last year was unlike anything he had ever seen.
“More squid in the water than we’ve ever seen, there’s more krill that’s showing up, less pressure on the commercial fisherman, there’s no more gill nets that are close to shore,” said Salas.
For a third year, a pod of Orcas showed up Wednesday off the coast of Palos Verdes, something Salas calls a sure sign of another banner season.
“It’s all the efforts of the hard work,” he said. “I believe we’re just right now seeing the ocean coming back to life.”
