LA's New Year's Eve Countdown In Grand Park Aims To Rival New York's Times Square

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Angelenos looking for something fun to do to celebrate the new year may find it right in the heart of Downtown.

It looks to be a grand New Year's Eve countdown party in Grand Park, located on North Grand Ave. between the music center and City Hall.

The event, which kicks off at 6 p.m. is free of charge and is open to the public.

VT Productions, who is in charge of the design and execution of the event, including lights and projections, has spent the past two months getting their calibrations just right.

"When a person sees this, they have this kind of reward that occurs," artist Michael Murphy, who is taking part in the event, said. "When they see the illusion that was put together for them, they have this moment of really nice excitement."

Murphy's 750-piece sculpture fits to read "2014" from one side, and "LA" from the other side. Also included is a pink, inflatable "LA" installation, with disco balls and tremendous projections on city buildings.

"People can expect to have their minds blown away from a sense of graphic animation," Grand Park director Lucas Rivera said. "They're going to see City Hall come to life in a way they've never seen it before."

According to Rivera, the event is about the city of Los Angeles, and giving it's residents a sense of something along the lines of what New Yorkers have in Times Square.

"It's about LA. This is by LA, for LA," Rivera told CBS2/KCAL9's Adrianna Weingold. "So, people should come down here because they feel proud of being an Angeleno."
