Woman Dies In Hospital Parking Lot After Christmas Day Drive-By Shooting

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A woman wounded in a drive-by shooting died in the parking lot of a South LA hospital that was not equipped to treat her wounds, the coroner's office said Thursday.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of E. 87th Street, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Juliana Barrios, 24, was fatally wounded while attending a Christmas party and taken to Martin Luther King Jr. Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center for treatment.

The care center previously operated as a hospital, but was shut down in 2007 by County Supervisors due to medical errors and neglect, leaving only an ambulatory care center in its place.

Barrios, of Pomona, was pronounced dead in the parking lot after the medical center could not provide proper medical aid, the coroner's office said.

No suspect information was released and officials said Barrios was not affiliated with any gangs.

Anyone with information should call LAPD's Southeast Division at (213)972-7828.
