WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — A 26-year-old Whittier man Thursday faced assault with a deadly weapon charges after his father shot him during an argument.

The shooting happened around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 9600 block of Du Page Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Stephen Turner, Jr. had allegedly been fighting with his girlfriend at the home and had threatened to kill her with a knife.

In an attempt to get Turner to stop arguing with the woman, his father armed himself with his handgun.

“The suspect reportedly lunged at his father with the knife, and in an apparent act of self-defense, the father fired his handgun at the suspect, striking him in the torso and causing him to drop the knife,” Lt. Bill Evans said.

Turner suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and was transported in stable condition to a local hospital, where he was arrested.

Turner’s father was not arrested.

No additional injuries were reported.
