817 Firearms Collected During Annual LA Gun Buyback

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — More than 800 firearms were collected over the weekend during the city's annal gun buyback program, the mayor's office announced Monday.

According to officials, 387 handguns, 131 shotguns and 31 assault weapons were among the 817 weapons surrendered.

The event featured three locations across Los Angeles were residents could turnover firearms with no questions asked in exchange for Ralph's gift cards and pre-paid Visa cards.

At the conclusion of the event, Ralphs and Visa gift cards totaling approximately $81,900 had been exchanged for firearms.

Since the program began in 2009, nearly 12,000 guns have been turned in, according to Mayor Garcetti's office.
