Families Camp Out For Annual Christmas Toy Giveaway In Boyle Heights

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — People were lined up in Boyle Heights Friday night for the annual Miracle on 1st Street Christmas Toy Giveaway.

The event, which is the city's largest toy giveaway for inner-city kids, takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Youth Center.

Co-chair Priscilla Hernandez says the event has provided free holiday toys to families in need for 32 years.

"It truly is a miracle for all the kids that are waiting in line already," she said. "We have bikes, we have basketballs, we try to accommodate all the different wants and desires for this Christmas."

Janet Padron and her 3-year-old daughter Lily have been camped outside the youth center since Thursday morning.

Lily was there for one thing. "Dollies," she said.

Asked what it meant to be able to give Lily a special holiday, Padron said, "We're really grateful."
