Nike To Release New $225 Kobe Bryant Shoes

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Nike Wednesday unveiled a new Kobe Bryant sneaker dubbed the Kobe9.

The higher cut footwear is being described by some as a walking or wrestling shoe, rather than a high-top sneaker.

The colorful shoe features several red lines across the heels to match the Laker guard's sutures from his recent Achilles surgery.

Bryant told ESPN.com that the new design tells an inspirational story.

"It's a symbol of the story we're trying to tell. It's a constant reminder of where I came from. From that night after I hurt myself and I expressed my anger in my Facebook rant to the state I'm in now. I wanted something I could draw inspiration from. Everyone doubts I can't come back and do it again and here I am," he said.

Following the sneaker's unveiling, #Kobe9 was trending on Twitter in Los Angeles.

The sneakers, which are the first shoe to use Nike's new FlyKnit technology, go on sale Feb. 8, 2014. They retail at $225.
