GOP Assembly Candidate Susan Shelley Seeks Recount

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Susan Shelley, who narrowly lost a special election for an Assembly seat in a San Fernando Valley-based  district, is seeking a recount.

The official canvass shows Shelley, a Republican, lost to Democrat Matt Dababneh by 329 votes. But Shelley said Monday that her tally shows elections officials counted 206 more ballots than should have been available to count.

Los Angeles elections officials could not immediately say how long it will take to recount the nearly 30,000 ballots cast in the Nov. 19 special election to fill the vacant Assembly District 45 seat.

The district includes portions of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. But Shelley wants a recount only from Los Angeles County, which has the vast majority of district residents.

If Dababneh holds on, his victory would restore Assembly Democrats' two-thirds majority.
