Christ Cathedral To Close Until 2016 For Major Renovations
GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA.com) — Christ Cathedral, formerly known as the Crystal Cathedral, will close for major renovations this weekend.
The Diocese of Orange will spend $29 million to transform the 75,000-square-foot church into a Catholic cathedral.
The building houses one of the world's largest pipe organs, which will be shipped to Italy for refurbishment.
Christ Cathedral closes to the public Sunday and isn't expected to reopen until 2016.
The iconic church, once known for televangelist Robert Schuller's "Hour of Power", was sold to the Diocese of Orange in 2011 for $57.7 million.
