NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Officials have identified the 18-year-old man fatally shot by police Saturday night in North Hollywood as Jose Jovanny Mendoza.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. near Burbank Boulevard and Riverton Avenue while officers were responding to a report of a man with a gun, LAPD Sgt. Ernie Fischer said.

Police say Mendoza turned toward officers while holding a semi-automatic pistol. Officers viewed Mendoza as a threat and opened fire.

The North Hollywood resident was pronounced dead at a hospital.
