5K Turkeys Donated During Annual Giveaway In Compton

COMPTON (CBSLA.com) — More than 5,000 turkeys were donated to local families in need Monday during a Thanksgiving giveaway in Compton.

The ninth annual Healthy Family Update and Turkey Giveaway started at 10 a.m. at MLB Urban Youth Academy, 901 E. Artesia Blvd.

"Our first turkey drive was 350 turkeys, now, today, it's over 5,000 turkeys," Assemblyman Isadore Hall, III said. "The reality is, the people were out here at 4:30 this morning lined up to get a turkey, so the impact is huge; the significance is very great and it shows that our community is still hurting."

The event, which ran until 2 p.m., was aimed at reducing obesity, diabetes and HIV/AIDs in under-served communities while promoting healthier lifestyles for children and families.

Free diabetes, HIV, blood pressure and BMI health screenings were also available to residents.
