Teen Arrested For Stealing Part Of Statue Honoring Detective Killed In Dorner Shootout

LAKE ELSINORE (CBSLA.com) — A teen was arrested for stealing a piece of a statue created in honor of San Bernardino County Sheriff's Detective Jeremiah MacKay, who was shot to death by alleged gunman and ex-LAPD officer Christopher Dorner, officials said Thursday.

The 13-year-old was arrested Tuesday at a middle school in Lake Elsinore after he reportedly posted a photo of the bronze dove on the photo sharing website, Instagram, according to authorities.

The dove was stolen between Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m. and Sept. 9 at 6 a.m. from the granite base of the MacKay statue, Det. Richard Camacho said.

The sculpture, which was unveiled Sept.1 in Lake Arrowhead Village, was created by local sculptor, Khachik Khachatouryan, and depicts MacKay with his hand over his heart.

The 15-year veteran was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 12 during a gun battle with Dorner.

The teen reportedly used an alias when he posted the photo and bragged about stealing the dove, but detectives were able to identify him and conduct the arrest . The dove was located inside a shoebox in his bedroom during a search of his home.

Both the juvenile and a parent were issued citations, Camacho said.
