Knife-Wielding Man Arrested For Attacking Yorba Linda Jogger

YORBA LINDA (CBSLA.com) — A man has been arrested on suspicion of attacking a woman as she jogged in Yorba Linda Thursday morning, authorities said.

Matthew Weingartner, 19, is under guard at a hospital where he is being treated for dog bites and knife wounds he sustained as deputies arrested him, Orange County sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

The victim was jogging on a trail near Imperial Highway and Valley View Avenue about 6:15 a.m. when she encountered the suspect headed the other way, Hallock said. Just before they crossed paths, the suspect stopped, turned around and jogged ahead.

At some point, the suspect slowed to let her pass, then grabbed her from behind and showed her a knife in an attempt to steal her iPod, Hallock said.

When the woman fought back, the suspect ran away and hid in the area, he said.

Deputies set up a perimeter and were about two houses from clearing it when they found Weingartner hiding in a vacant lot behind some pallets at Bastanchury Road, west of Imperial, at 9:30 a.m., Hallock said.

He was found after a K-9 dog bit him in the arm, KNX1070's Mike Landa reports.

"In the process of him trying to fight the K-9 off, he actually suffered a superficial stab wound to his stomach from the knife he was actually holding that he utilized in the attempted robbery," Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock

Hallock says Weingartner is expected to be booked on suspicion of attempted robbery, kidnap with intent to commit robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.
