Spousal Abuse Suspect Shot And Killed By Hawthorne Police

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — A spousal abuse suspect died Wednesday after he was shot during an encounter with police in Hawthorne.

Authorities responded to a 911 spousal abuse call in the 13900 block of Cerise Avenue around 12:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses indicated the suspect barricaded himself inside a storage room in the parking garage of an apartment building.

Police said they tried to take the man into custody peacefully, but the suspect suddenly stepped out with a handgun, which forced an officer to fire, the Sheriff's Department said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he later died. No officers were hurt.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The incident is under investigation.
