Homemade Volcano Explodes, Prompting Evacuation At Mar Vista School
MAR VISTA (CBSLA.com) — An explosion that forced evacuations classes at Mark Twain Middle School in Mar Vista turned out to be a science experiment gone awry.
One student suffered minor injuries when a science experiment involving homemade volcanoes made with dry ice blew up about noon Wednesday. The student was released to his parents.

"Evidently, [there were] volcanoes in one of the classrooms, a homemade volcano, and the dry ice was to facilitate the realism of it," Los Angeles Police Lt. David Cruz said.
One of the containers of dry ice was a Thermos, Cruz said.
The explosion drew the LAPD and the bomb squad and prompted the evacuation of the building, but the blast turned out to be an accident.
A second container of dry ice also exploded, but the technician checking it was not injured. A third container was detonated by the bomb squad.
