Coast Guard Rescues Man, 2 Boys From Skiff Near Marina Del Rey

MARINA DEL REY (CBSLA.com) — The Coast Guard rescued a La Crescenta man and his two 11-year-old old boys from a skiff off the coast of Marina del Rey.

40-year-old Tom Lee and his two sons were headed to home to Marina del Rey from Cabrillo Beach when they apparently ran out of gas.

They were supposed to arrive around 12 a.m., but called the Coast Guard at 9 p.m. to request a vessel assist. The group later canceled the call, saying a friend would help them get to shore. However, that person was unable to locate them, according to the Coast Guard.

Lee's son Steven said they knew it would be a long night after the motor stalled.

"We just cuddled," said Steven. "We all cuddled up to each other to keep warm."

Tom was able to phone for help again on Friday morning despite having a low phone battery.

Rescuers say Baywatch Redondo Beach located the group shortly before 9 a.m. tired and shaken, but safe.

"They helped us out, big time," Steven said.

Coast Guard officials said Lee and his sons did the right thing by not panicking and staying on the boat until they were rescued.
