Insurance Broker Who Defrauded Tom Hanks Gets 27 Months

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A Thousand Oaks insurance broker has been handed a 27-month sentence in federal prison for overbilling actor Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita WIlson.

Jerry Goldman Sentenced

Jerry Goldman, 60, has also been ordered to pay over $840,000 in restitution penalties, as prosecutors say the insurance broker took advantage of his clients' success, wealth and trust.

"Sometimes he was inflating the insurance premium by 600 percent, or sometimes, by tens of thousands of dollars," acting first assistant U.S. attorney Stephanie Yonekura said. "I believe the reason why they didn't notice is they weren't familiar with the insurance industry and they didn't know what an actual valid premium would look like."

Yonekura also said that Goldman, who pleaded guilty to charges of fraud in April, apologized to his clients during his sentencing hearing.

Goldman's attorney has not released any statements on his client's behalf.
