Convicted Rapist Who Ditched GPS Tracker is Captured In Palm Springs

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday said extensive media coverage helped them nab a convicted rapist who cut off his GPS monitoring device and allegedly made threatening phone calls to the victim's family.

Dennis McKenzie, 55, was recently released from state prison. He had been living at a Long Beach halfway house when he cut off the device and vanished, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said.

Since his disappearance, McKenzie allegedly "made more than 50 threatening and obscene phone calls to the family of an 80-year-old victim who he brutally raped in 2004," officials said.

McKenzie had a history of frequenting the Lake Arrowhead area, Long Beach, Banning, Los Angeles County and Palm Springs.

Officials said a citizen observed McKenzie in Palm Springs Wednesday afternoon.

Police took McKenzie into custody about 4:30 p.m.

Authorities said McKenzie was arrested without incident.
